A FINE & RARE 16-BORE NEEDLEFIRE LEVER-BREECH SHOTGUN, MODEL 'CHATEAUVILLARD PATENT', serial no. 191,
circa 1850, with browned fine damascus side-by-side barrels with integral receiver, the top-rib signed in gilt 'MONTIGNY & FUSNOT A BRUXELLES', bead fore-sight, plain sides to the receiver, the rearwards sliding breech with finely engraved top featuring hunting scenes and carved scroll engraved central 'rib', the engraving continuing along the lever locked by a spring-catch at comb, one-piece highly figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron heel-plate engraved with scrolls and gamebirds in flight on the top-spur, finely engraved trigger-guard bow and lower tang, engraved scroll-tipped cocking lever forwards of the trigger-guard, the mounting plate under fore-end also finely engraved with a scene of a hunting dog bordered by scrolls, brass tipped under-barrel clearing rod and ring swivels for sling, the whole remaining in a fine state of preservation with much original finish and colour
Provenance: Made to patent no. 12613 of May 15th 1849 and filed by Louis Alfred de. Chateauvillard under 'Improvements in fire-arms, bullets, cartridges, bayonets, and ordnance.' The specification and drawings describe breech-loading arms in which a sliding breech moved by a lever is used, upon the principle called "Montigny's system."
